A while back I remember you having a day job that you held down when the band wasn’t on tour. Do you still have that job now that The Swellers has continued to progress? If so, does it keep you grounded?
Yeah, I work as an electrician when im home. I’m not just incredibly handsome, I’m also super smart and a super tough guy. Who’da thought? I do still have that job. I’m not too sure I’d ever stop working. I need something to do when I’m home. Coming home from tour is such an amazing feeling, but coming home and just sitting around while all your friends are at work, it gets pretty boring so as long as my boss keeps me around, i’ll always be going into work. I’ve been working as an electrician even before i started touring which was a looooong time ago now, even before The Swellers.
What made you first want to start working on movies like “Total Behavior” and “Les Incorruptibles”?
Well, we were on our first european tour and I was filming a lot of the scenery and places we were visiting to look back on when I’m old, and as I was filming, it just looked so boring and lame. So I don’t know why but i just got the idea to film a movie throughout Europe so that we can look back on all the cool places we’ve been to and it wouldn’t be boring to watch. So that’s how that started. As for “Total Behavior”, while we were in Australia, I met and became pretty close friends with Keith and we literally just had the exact same sense of humour and when i showed him Les Incorruptibles, he freaked out and mentioned that he always wanted to do something like that, so naturally, we got the flip cam out and made that movie which is hands down my favorite.
Do you think you’re going to continue to make films while you’re on tour? Where do you get ideas for the story lines?
Yeah, I’ll definitely keep making movies but it’s tough now because i feel like “Total Behavior” was so dang good that it’ll be hard to top. With regards to ideas, i honestly just think of something ridiculous and use that as a starting point, then I make up the scenes as we go along haha. Nothing is really planned.
The Swellers seems to be a close knit band. How do you keep from fighting while on tour etc?
I think every band has little tiffs here and there. If any of us get into tiffs, we just get over it. No point in being pissed about it forever. Usually when someone pisses someone off and they know they’re being a dick, they’ll usually apologize and that really makes things move along smoothly. Plus, I’m in a band with guys I like and we all usually just get along so we never really have to worry about fighting.
Now that Good For Me has been out for a while, what aspect of the album is your favorite?
My favorite aspect about that record is all the hard work we put into it. I think it’s our best release yet, and working with Bill Stevenson and all the fellas in the Blasting Room was such an incredible experience. I love how big the record sounds as well.
If you had to rename the band, what name would you choose?
I would name us Party Package Pickle Buns 68.
What are some of your favorite bands/artists at the moment?
Jono just tuned me onto Frank Turner. I think he’s phenomenal. That’s about the only new artist i’ve listened to recently. I’m pretty bad with listening to new music which i realize is terrible. But I have so many bands I love that i’m too pre-occupied listening to those artists and records to find new ones. Jono is always listening to new bands and he’s my main source of new bands.
Thanks for your time! You guys will be touring thought the UK and Europe this Spring. Any ideas on what will happen this Summer?
I actually don’t know what we planned for the Summer so that’s a question I cannot answer. BUT yes, we will be in the UK and Europe soon so everyone get on a plane and come support us overseas. You’ll have a blast I promise.
